Atari has partnered with Animoca Brands as they seek to develop the blockchain versions of their popular games RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch and Goon Squad.

On December 18, Atari announced that it has partnered with Animoca Brands Limited, a subsidiary of Animoca Brands Corporation Limited. The license agreement between the two companies will enable Animoca to develop and publish the blockchain versions of the Atari mobile game titles RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch and Goon Squad. The games would be produced for users all over the globe except those in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau.

In addition to that, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding that would see them build a strategic partnership to explore mutual opportunities in different areas such as gaming, product development, blockchain, and others.

The blockchain version of the games is expected to record success considering the fact that RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch has over 19 million downloads globally. The game has also taken advantage of the water park expansion in July 2018 while the addition of new restaurant features back in September has also been positive for it. The restaurant feature was added in partnership with Foodgod known as Jonathan Cheban.

Goon Squad has also become popular, with the game about players being put into an underworld ruled by mobsters, gambling and fast-paced card battles. The players can find their way from lowly goons and work to become Godfathers as they build their own criminal empire.

According to the partnership between the two companies, Animoca will develop and publish the blockchain version of the games. The new games will come with a feature that will enable the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The agreement between the two extends through to 31 March 2022.

Games to be published in the second half of next year

With the agreement in place, Animoca will start working on developing the games and are expected to publish them in the second half of the year. By granting them license to publish the game, Atari will receive a minimum guarantee against future revenues of USD 250,000, payable in shares of the Animoca’s stock. The agreement also sees Animoca pay a revenue share after gross revenue generated by the game surpass the USD 500,000 mark.

The shares offered to Atari will be locked up for a period of nine months starting from the day it was handed out and will be released in phases through 31 August 2019.

Partnership generates excitement

The partnership between Atari and Animoca has generated excitement amongst members of the companies. Yat Siu, the co-founder, and chairman of Animoca Brands stated that “This deal marks a special moment for me because I started my career working with Atari and using Atari computers. The RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise is, like many of Atari’s properties, a true evergreen, having been around for two decades. Given the strategic and commercial elements of this incredibly fun simulation, it is a perfect candidate for blockchain adaptation.”

Frédéric Chesnais, the main shareholder and CEO of Atari meanwhile said “We are proud and delighted to enter into this long-term and strategic relationship with Animoca Brands, which also allows us to become a shareholder in one of the most exciting innovators in the world of decentralized gaming. We hope that this agreement paves the way to further cooperation on other Atari products.”
