Peer-to-peer (p2p) torrent client BitTorrent announced yesterday that it has partnered with CoinPayments, a crypto payments gateway. The partnership will see CoinPayments integrate the BTT token on its platform. The updates will affect as many as a 100 million people, as BitTorrent, founded in 2014, has amassed over a 100 million users currently utilizing its decentralized p2p network.
In January, BitTorrent launched its BTT token on the Tron network. The token will be very useful for users of BitTorrent as it will help optimize the network speed and lead to faster downloads via paid prioritization. The token was launched roughly six months after BitTorrent was acquired by Tron.
According to yesterday’s press release obtained by Cointelegraph, BitTorrent and CoinPayments had previously collaborated to support Tron (TRX), Bitcoin (BTC), and Binance Coin (BNB) payments for premium services. The addition of BTT token to CoinPayments will enable BitTorrent users to pay for BitTorrent and µTorrent Pro subscriptions that offer services such as file conversion, HD quality streaming, and malware protection.
Justin Sun, the founder of Tron and CEO of BitTorrent, discussed the roadmap for tokenization of the BitTorrent platform. He stated that the partnership with CoinPayments is to ensure that the BTT token gains liquidity in the online marketplace before it is fully integrated into the BitTorrent desktop and mobile products.
The BTT-powered blockchain application, BitTorrent Speed, is expected to be launched this summer as part of BitTorrent’s Windows-based µTorrent Classic client. According to BitTorrent, the application will enable users to exchange BTT tokens for seeding and bandwidth, resulting in faster download speed.
Tron and BitTorrent platforms are integrated through the so-called Project Atlas, also known as Web 3.0. Tron’s Project Atlas is designed to facilitate this integration, aiming to create a decentralized content distribution platform using digital currency. It is important to note that, amongst the leading cryptocurrencies, Tron (TRX) has been the best performer so far this year. It is the eight largest cryptocurrency by market cap, trading at around 0.025743 USD.
