The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Dapper Labs have joined hands to launch NBA Top Shot. According to the league, NBA Top Shot is a home for blockchain-based collectibles. Through this launch, the partners aim to allow fans to buy, trade, and own distinctive video clips that capture in-game moments from the NBA season. These include Kevin Durant’s 3-point shoot and Joel Embiid’s dunk among others. The fans can also use the digital collectibles for on-chain games and tournaments.
Explaining the concept of the project, Roham Gharegozlou, the CEO of Dapper Labs said,
Through NBA Top Shot basketball fans can engage with their favorite players, teams, and each other in entirely new ways. We use the latest in blockchain technology to create assets and experiences that are guaranteed limited edition and authentic, not to mention portable and permanent in a way nothing digital has ever been before.
NBA Top Shot is similar to NBA’s NBA 2K product. This is because it would allow players to built rosters. On top of this, players will be able to purchase specific moves from the previous season.
A Gateway for Mass Adoption
NBA Top Shot is Dapper Labs most recent project. It comes two years after the launch of Cryptokitties and just months after the pre-sale of cheese wizardz. Through these games, Dapper Labs has become one of the biggest names in the digital collectibles space. For instance, Cryptokitties’ trading activity surged significantly and clogged the entire Ethereum network.
This partnership with the NBA will expose Dapper Labs to the league’s massive audience. As a result, the company will have a good shot of bringing the blockchain and token economy to millions of individuals at a go.
