The coming of bitcoin to disrupt the financial market is as controversial as its creator. Up till now, the exact creator of the digital coin is not fully known. However, everyone knows the inventor by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. So far, it is unclear whether Nakamoto is an individual or group of persons. Nonetheless, he is believed to be the single individual with the highest stash of bitcoin.
In 2013, Sergio Lerner wrote that a little fewer than 5% of the total bitcoin supply belonged to Satoshi Nakamoto. He put the estimate at 100 million bitcoins. Recent research on Bitmex, however, shows that Lerner’s assessment might have been over-bloated. Bitmex believes that Satoshi’s bitcoin share was in the region of 600,000 to 700,000 coins. He also holds equal numbers of bitcoin cash.
The research conclude by observing that,
Although there is strong evidence of a dominant miner in 2009, we think the evidence is far less robust than many have assumed. Although a picture is worth a thousand words, sometimes pictures can be a little misleading. Even if one is convinced, the evidence only supports the claim that the dominant miner may have generated significantly less than a million bitcoin in our view. Perhaps 600,000 to 700,000 bitcoin is a better estimate.
